The Hobbitjedi - Chrono Trigger
Sometimes, a game comes along with a perfect balance of challenge, gameplay, fun, and story. Chrono Trigger was and is such a game. I originally dismissed this game the first time I saw it, but I quickly changed my tune once I actually played it. This game falls into the RPG genre, but even people who might normally dislike pure RPGs will likely find this game more enjoyable thanks to a more active combat system, among its other good points. The game was also released on the Playstation long after its SNES release. If you can get a copy, do so! You are sure not to regret picking up this gaming classic.
Characters
Chrono Trigger provides a total of seven, yes 7, playable characters that are normally grouped into a party of three. (Your party consist of only one or two people at the beginning.) You also get to provide names or nicknames if you so choose. The charactes all have melee and magic attacks at their disposal. The main character is Chrono, who remains mute for the entire game. You're assisted by several characters, two from your time period and the others from various time periods.
Story
Chrono Trigger is made great mainly by its fantastic story. Choosing different party members when the option becomes available will slightly effect the story. There are a total of eleven, yes 11, endings which give the game added replay value. The adventure starts when Chrono visits the Millennial Fair in his home kingdom of Guardia. There he meets a beautiful young girl who is cast back in time by accident. Chrono follows her on an adventure that starts with rescuing a princess and leads to a mission to save the planet's past, present, and future from an all consuming evil. It may sound a little cliche, but the game really takes the idea in a novel direction. The main plot consists of several side quests which add to the fun. The time travel element really adds to the story as you see the results your actions have over the course of time. The soundtrack is also a great plus for this game. Hours of gameplay, over the course of history, on a mission to save all humanity all add up to make this an excellent game.
A pleasant view.
The "Wings of Time", known as Warp when I play.
The creepy castle of the Magus.
A mission to avenge a friend's death.
Self-sacrifice to save one's friends.
A confrontation made easier by the ability to revive fallen friends.
A royal farewell.
The happiest of the endings.
